Mentorships

There is nothing like learning the art and science of agriculture from an experienced farmer. The one-on-one mentorship is a crucial part of our Farm Beginnings course. We work with each student individually to match him or her with a farmer-mentor in their geographical area who has a farming operation similar to what the new farmer wants to pursue.

The mentor and mentee meet face to face at the last regular class session and agree on their objectives and goals for the mentorship, as well as on their schedule. Some students are able to do a full-time daily mentorship, while others can meet only weekly or even monthly. No matter the frequency of in-person interactions, the mentorships begin in March and continue throughout the growing season – and beyond!

Farm Beginnings student Terry Starks talks with Steering Committee members and potential mentors, Kris and Marty Travis of Spence Farm.
